Finally! A group run! Something I CAN do! This morning in Santa Monica, we met as a team for the first time on Ocean and San Vicente. We circled around in first name alphabetical order to do our introductions, talked about the season basics once more, and we were off for a warm up run up San Vicente. I was curious to see how different IronTeam practices are from the TNT marathon team. Six seasons of the TNT marathon team, I felt pretty confident with my run, but was still excited to learn some new tips and pointers, coming from a long distance triathlon perspective.
Am I at a Vacation Resort?!
Determined to improve my swim, I went to my gym (Equinox South Bay)’s rooftop pool for the first time this morning. Whoa! I was blown away! It kinda looked like a nice resort, or a downtown LA rooftop pool, like the W or The Standard. Nice! I could get used to this. The point from the locker room to the actual pool was pretty cold (LA cold that is), but the pool itself is heated. One girl was swimming, but I don’t think many people utilize it, which is great for me! Less people to see how bad my swim technique (or lack of it) is. I took one of those floaty boards and just practiced getting my flutter kick the whole time. Our drills at this point doesn’t include any arm movement (yet), but it focuses on getting horizontal in the water, and being able to efficiently kick in the water. Kick, kick, kick, kick, kick… until I was somewhat used to it. By the end of the hour and half, I was actually better! As long as there’s some improvement, I’m happy.
Kick, kick, kick… keep on kicking.
First IronTeam Swim
Ok, I could have EASILY said, “No, I’m not going to join the IronTeam because I don’t know how to swim yet.”
I didn’t.
Crazy as it may sound, I never really had a doubt in my mind that I’ll eventually learn how to swim during this whole adventure. I was just a matter of WHEN. I’ve never been so determined to do this, and it’s such a rush because of it! I’ve taken my marathon training mentality to the swim, and just told myself I have to be patient, and trust that my coaches will get me through the finish line because four years ago, the TNT coaches made me from a video gaming couch potato to an addicted marathon runner.
Athens Classic Marathon 2010
Rewind back to 2008, my roommate Carlos suggested to our running circle of friends, that we should all do the Athens Marathon 2009. So many of us were so down to do it and excited, but plans fell through. In 2009, we noticed that the 2010 Athens Classic was going to be a special milestone race, 2,500th Anniversary of the original Battle of Marathon. Sold! I was NOT about to miss this one! Once they announced the next Athens Classic, Carlos and I e-mailed the planning organization of the event and got details. We kept going back to the site to see when registration would open. We would always keep tabs and update each other on the status. It wasn’t a few months later that they opened it, and we were one of the first to register! We didn’t care if we didn’t have a plane ticket or plans for hotels or hostels yet, we figured we’ll get that later. We started a Facebook Group to gain interest, and we had a good 40 or so people interested, but in the end, there were 10. The ten consisted of me and Carlos’ mutual friends from past Team in Training teams and friends of friends. We kept in touch via a more filtered e-mail group of the runners 100%. From there we shared our travel plans, travel deals and tips. We all had different room situations and different flight schedules, but I thought planning of everything went smoothly.
Fast forward to last weekend. Wow, I can’t believe a week already has passed since the big race. I flew via Lufthansa to Germany for a layover. It was delayed a an hour or so though, so I didn’t get to Greece until after midnight! Ok, super late at a country very unknown to me, wasn’t very ideal. This was where I should’ve had my little folder of fun and preparations could have been better. I took a $50 cab ride because I had no idea how iffy the busses or trains were. I didn’t understand any writing or signs, so I played it safe. I also had to make sure the cab wasn’t trying to rip me off either. I didn’t get to my hostel until 1ish. Our hostel situation was sweet at Athens Backpackers, as it was one of the highest rated hostels on Hostelworld.com, super clean, friendly staff, and we were able to meet so many people as they shuffled us around room to room. The first day my roomies were a bunch of girls from Milwaukee who didn’t get to the room until 4am. Super fun bunch, but they had to leave.
First IronTeam Session
Just a few days ago, my Athens Greece trip ended (more on that later). Today was our first session for the Team in Training IronTeam 2011 season. Everyone was shy at first, just like all first classes or first sessions of anything, but there were some opportunities to mingle and chat. Met a wide range of endurance sport experiences from beginner swimmers (like me), people who have done century rides, people who have only done a 10k run, people who haven’t bought a bike yet, people who have joined for the cause, and people who are transitioning from the TNT tri team.
Once it started, we did a quick intro roundabout with the staff and coaches, then talked about what to expect. After mentor breakout sessions, there was a bicycle 101 by Helen’s Cycles talking about our bike options and accessories. Very helpful & exciting stuff! Can’t wait to see what the road lies ahead!
What’s Next? A FULL Ironman Triathlon!
As a first post for joining the TNT IronTeam (which will start TOMORROW) , I’ll copy what I have on my Fundraising Page:
What is an Ironman Triathlon?
2.4 miles swim, 112 miles bike AND 26.2 run (All within a time limit of 16 hours)
Before you read my story, let me tell you my journey:

A Lot Can Happen in 20 Months
It’s been 20 months since my last update on this blog, and so much has happened since! I didn’t get to recap most of my races during this time so I will have to post them later as “flashback” entries. So what have I been up to? I’ve done 8 half marathons and 6 full marathons. One of which is still my favorite to date, The Anchorage Alaska Full Mayor’s Marathon. The course was absolutely beautiful, clean air, nice small town destination race. I’ve also been on track to get the Rock N Roll Rock Legend Medal, which you get if you do 7 Rock N Roll Events in a year. This year I’ve done 6 (3 full and 3 half marathons) so far, and of those events, RNR Chicago was my favorite. A few days ago I completed my 10th marathon in Athens, Greece. It was a huge 2,500 anniversary celebration of the Battle of Marathon, and it ended at the first Olympic Stadium – one event not to forget! So much to tell you all! I’ll recap all of my past events later, but now I just wanted to get up to speed for this blog because there are many big things coming up!
New Summer ’09 Season Underway!
Sorry for the lack of updates, it’s been pretty busy with the new summer marathon season, which is already at week 5! As you can see from the screenshot above, I’ve been busy creating and maintaining that website. During the season, I will update fundraising updates on the Westside LA TNT Marathon Blog, and I will post updates on my training here.
Week 5 practice tomorrow will be in Marina Del Rey, one of my favorite running spots. It’s not too busy and it’s relatively flat. The tough part about tomorrow is the it’s Daylight Saving’s Time adjustment so it’s really 7am instead of 8am. I’m so glad to be back in Team In Training though, especially as a mentor. I love helping people out, and so far it’s been a great season. Everyone is so friendly & energetic (as always).
52 in 52
Amazing! Dane Rauschenberg (www.fiddy2.org) finished 52 marathons in 52 weeks back in 2006. This video tells you why he did it, and how. You know what else is crazy? He still managed to NOT take any time off, and still worked a full time job averaging at 50 hours a week! This goes to show that anything is possible!
TNT Scrapbook
Last year was Team in Training’s 20th anniversary. I don’t know how I missed this one, but it’s their special 20th anniversary website. They have a scrapbook you can browse through with some interesting photos about the Team and its experiences.
